Theme Choice:

The first big step we had to take in developing the video is the same as what had to be done for kiosk, website and all the other creative aspects of the competition, which was to pick the theme that everything would be based off of. After a few brainstorming sessions, we came up with a long list of themes that we liked and thought had a lot of potential. Among that list we came up with themes such as Minecraft, Animal Crossing, Tetris, Windows XP, etc. We eventually narrowed our list down little by little until we came to the final decision of Minecraft. We tried to pick a theme that had a combination of originality, potential and it’s recognizability with judges. Using those criteria, we thought Minecraft was the best choice and chose it as our theme. From there, it was a matter of figuring out how our theme would be presented in the video, website, etc.

Our Script:

1 EXT. Samir'S HOUSE - MORNING 1

We open on a humble looking house in a nice neighbourhood. The sun is coming up and the world feels like it's just beginning to open its eyes. An alarm sound can be heard from inside the house, one that's familiar to us all.

2 INT. Samir'S ROOM - MORNING 2

We see someone curled up in the bedsheets, groaning at the sound of his alarm. Finally, Samir gives in and grabs his phone to turn off his alarm. When he opens his phone to see if there are any new notifications waiting for him, he sees an email titled "CRC COMPETITION: INVICTA FEBRUARY 18- 20, 2021."

SAMIR

What's this?

He opens the email and we see his face as he scrolls through and reads it. A smile spreads across his face. A text notification pops up on his phone as he reads the email. It's from AILISH.

AILISH (TEXT)

Did you see the rules for the competition?

SAMIR (TEXT)

Yeah, I'm reading them right now.

AILISH (TEXT)

How do you wanna work on this? We can't exactly get together in person.

SAMIR (TEXT)

I know a place where we can work.

AILISH (TEXT)

...You better not be serious.

SAMIR (TEXT)

You bet I am.

AILISH (TEXT)

Fine, I'll be on in a few minutes, you better not be late. Samir sits up on his bed and rubs his hands together.

SAMIR

Let's do this. He reaches his hand out. A Minecraft diamond sword shoots out of his closet and lands in his hand. He stands up and strikes a hero pose with the sword, but the moment is undercut when he yawns and stretches.

SAMIR

Okay, let's get to work. He walks over to his computer and opens it. After waiting for a few seconds he gets to the home screen. His screen shows him opening Minecraft, creating a new world and titling it "Invicta 2021."

3 EXT. MINECRAFT WORLD - DAY 3

We find ourselves in a much less defined and blockier world. Samir looks around the world, the animals running around and the flowers swaying in the fictional breeze.

SAMIR (V.O.)

Where's the shop again? He turns around and sees the shop.

SAMIR (V.O.)

Right, here it is.

4 INT. MINECRAFT SHOP - CONTINUOUS 4

He opens up the doors and walks inside the shop and slowly looks around.

SAMIR (V.O.)

Home sweet home. He walks to the table at the centre of the room and looks at the robot on it.

SAMIR (V.O.)

When is Ailish getting on? The sound of someone entering a discord call can be heard.

AILISH (V.O.)

I'm here, I'm here. Samir turns around and sees Ailish in an Alex skin at the doorway to the "shop."

SAMIR (V.O.)

There you are. Okay, let's get to work.

AILISH (V.O.)

Right, first we should go over the rules of the game, so we can figure out what kind of robot we're building.

SAMIR (V.O.)

Yeah, that's a good idea. They both walk up to the whiteboard on one of the walls of the shop. We zoom into the board and transition to...

5 EXT. MINECRAFT OPEN FIELD - DAY 5

An open, empty landscape is home to a mock-field of the robotics competition. It's a square with multiple coloured squares inside of it, and a character in a robot skin is standing in the centre.

AILISH (V.O.)

So the robot starts in the centre of the field, and has 5 minutes to assemble any one of 25 structures using a combination of cubes, small square-based prisms, large square-based prisms, triangle-based prisms and trapezoidal-based prisms... The robot character walks to the different spaces were these prisms are placed.

AILISH (V.O.)

...And each structure has a certain point value to it based on what blocks you use in the structure and the difficulty of the build. The robot builds a structure and a point value flashes on screen. The robot jumps in joy at the points it just got. A few pictures of other structures flash on screen, ranging from the easiest to the hardest build.

AILISH (V.O.)

Buuuut if it falls apart you won't get the points. The structure falls apart and the robot looks down in sadness.

SAMIR (V.O.)

And there's a bonus multiplier for how quickly you finish it in the 5 minutes. If you put the orb in its spot, you stop the timer and get the bonus based on how quickly you finished it. The robot walks over to the corner of the field and drops an eye of ender into a cauldron.

AILISH (V.O.)

If the structure isn't completed in those 5 minutes, then those potential points won't count. A creeper walks into view and unceremoniously blows up the structure. The robot is very sad because of this.

6 INT. MINECRAFT SHOP - CONTINUOUS 6

We return back to the shop with Samir and Ailish.

AILISH (V.O.)

That's all the rules, right?

SAMIR (V.O.)

Yeah, I think that's everything. They stand in silence for a few seconds.

AILISH (V.O.)

So what's the plan for the robot?

SAMIR (V.O.)

Here, I came up with a few ideas. Samir walks up to the whiteboard and a design pops up on it.

SAMIR (V.O.)

What do you think? Ailish inspects it for a few seconds.

AILISH (V.O.)

How exactly does it work?

SAMIR (V.O.)

The plan is for it to be an autonomous robot that will build the structure on that palette in the middle of the robot. Then once it's all put together, it'll place the structure in the construction zone. Then it throws the ball into the hoop to stop the timer.

AILISH (V.O.)

Well it's a good start.

SAMIR (V.O.)

Great, we should get to work on the real thing as soon as possible then. The sound of someone's stomach rumbling can be heard, and Ailish looks at Samir.

SAMIR (V.O.)

You know what, I'm gonna eat first, then we can get to work on it.

AILISH (V.O.)

Sounds like a plan. The sound of people leaving the discord call can be heard and Samir saves and exits the world.

7 INT. Samir'S ROOM - MORNING 7

Samir is back in his room, he gets out of his chair and goes to get himself breakfast.

8 INT. Samir'S KITCHEN - MORNING 8

Samir is sitting peacefully by himself, in the middle of eating some breakfast. As he eats, the Minecraft eating sound can be heard. When he finishes, he sits back.

SAMIR

Time to get to work.

9 MONTAGE - ROBOT IS BEING BUILT 9

A) Robot Room - The base of the robot is being built. As pieces are being placed, they make the Minecraft block placing sound. B) Solder Room - Samir is soldering and accidentally burns himself. Minecraft fire appears around him and the sound of him taking damage can be heard. C) Hallway - Ailish goes after a spider crawling on the ground in an attempt to kill it. D) Robot Room - More pieces are being added to the robot, and the block placing sound can still be heard. E) Random Room - Samir and Ailish try eating snacks, but can't find a way to eat through their masks. F) Robot Room - The final pieces of the robot are added, and the pair celebrate.

10 INT. ROBOT ROOM - DAY 10

The team looks at the completed robot and marvels at their work.

SAMIR

Well that wasn't too bad.

AILISH

Yeah, we're right on time for the competition. As they celebrate and begin to relax, something can be heard walking outside of the robot room.

EXTRA

Hey guys, do you hear that? They all look at the window on one end of the room. A creeper head wearing a mask slowly rises into view and it sounds like it's just about to explode. FADE TO BLACK. The sound of an explosion can be heard. A windows error message appears on screen.

Filming Struggles/Experiences:

By far the biggest challenge that we faced in terms of filming was our inability to meet up in person to film the video. We were able to write the script and go over pre-production for video over platforms such as Zoom or Discord, but the filming process was much more difficult. Due to the various lockdowns and restrictions that were put in place over the winter break, we were unable to meet at school to film. We had to delay when we would start shooting on multiple occasions, which made the filming process much more difficult.
